Russell has been actively laying hedges for many years initially fuelled by the desire to lay a hedge on a Small Holding he owns and manages, but don’t let this fool you. Born and bred in inner city Birmingham where hedges weren’t in ample supply and certainly not being laid. After a long public service career spanning the Military, Prison Service and Fire Service Russell moved from laying hedges on a part time basis to commercial hedgelaying on a fulltime seasonal footing laying on average 2000 meters of hedge per season.
Additionally, Russell is an active member and advocate of the National Hedgelaying Society (NHLS) and has written and piloted the first Hedgelaying Apprenticeship Programme funded by the NHLS, mentoring and teaching two apprentice’s and guided them on to competition success and creating a blueprint of future apprenticeship schemes for the NHLS.
Additionally, Russell is an active member and advocate of the National Hedgelaying Society (NHLS) and has written and piloted the first Hedgelaying Apprenticeship Programme funded by the NHLS, mentoring and teaching two apprentice’s and guided them on to competition success and creating a blueprint of future apprenticeship schemes for the NHLS.
Russell also regularly competes in hedgelaying competitions Nationally and Regionally and is also the Charmain and lead organiser of the Cotswold Hedgelaying Competition that is run annually in October and attracts 40 cutters the biggest regional competition outside of the National Championships.
Russell has been fortunate to be involved in laying hedges at HRH King Charles estate at Highgrove, Gloucestershire, and appeared on the BBC’s Countryfile programme laying hedges for Adam Henson and has also been featured on BBC Radio 4’s Saturday Live programme with Adrian Childs.

Hedgelaying Service
With his billhook in his hand, there's nowhere Russell prefers to be than in the thick of the thorn laying hedges. Accredited by the National Hedge Laying Society, Russell is proficient in his craft, ensuring that each hedge whether it’s a gnarly old unkept field hedge or a maiden row of hawthorn in a domestic garden receives the finest restoration to improve the condition and effectiveness of the hedge not only for livestock and wildlife but the bio diversity and carbon capture benefits.
